Description

Who owns the narrative in the halls of power or the tent cities of protest?

The Missouri School of Journalism invites you to a viewing of the documentary “Fight for the First” and a discussion about journalism in an age of protest.

Walk with young reporters, photographers and editors as they take on a major story in their own backyard: protests and a hunger strike on the University of Missouri campus. Filmmaker Sharon Liese shows their journey as they confront the cold shoulders and accusations of fake news at the local, state and national levels. The setting involves the Columbia Missourian, a community newsroom that has trained thousands of journalists throughout the world in its 110-year history.

The 20-minute screening will be followed by a moderated discussion about issues the film raises, including journalistic access during protest events, competing efforts to control news narratives, and the quest for independent truth amid a media landscape where everyone has the ability to reach a mass audience directly.

The evening will conclude with socializing over hors d’oeuvres + cash bar.
